Empowering Communities: TBB’s Journey Towards Global Mental Health Awareness and Support
Mental health has been a topic of growing concern worldwide, especially in the wake of the COVD-19 pandemic. More and more people are recognizing the importance of taking care of their mental health, seeking support, and advocating for mental health awareness.
TBB is a non-profit organization that aims to provide mental health training to communities in Kenya, as well as explore opportunities for international programming. Since its inception in 2018, TBB has achieved significant milestones, including the recruitment of volunteer teams, the initiation of training programs, and the development of programs focused on community mental health awareness.
One of TBB’s main goals is to increase access to mental health support in communities where mental health care is often overlooked or stigmatized. Through our training programs, TBB empowers local clinicians and community members to identify and address mental health challenges, especially for caregivers to children with disabilities.
It is important to recognize that caregivers of children with disabilities face a unique set of challenges. They often experience physical and emotional exhaustion from constantly attending to the needs of their child. They may also feel isolated and unsupported, as friends and family members may not fully understand the demands of their caregiver role. Additionally, they might face financial difficulties due the cost of medical care and other related expenses.
For caregivers who belong to minority populations, these challenges may be compounded by systematic inequalities and discrimination. They may face additional barriers in accessing healthcare and support services, and they may feel the weight of stereotypes and prejudice. This can lead to increased stress and anxiety, which can take a toll on their mental health.
Mental health awareness and advocacy are also integral parts of TBB’s mission. By promoting mental health awareness, TBB aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health challenges and promote mental health care as deemed appropriate per our scope of practice and, when necessary, referring to mental health specialists. This is especially important in communities where mental health is often viewed as a taboo topic. By providing a safe and supportive environment for people to talk about their mental health, TBB is helping break down barriers and promote a more open and inclusive approach to mental health.
TBB’s approach not only addresses the immediate needs of the community but also creates a sustainable framework for long-term mental health support. TBB training facilitates and educates caregivers to prioritize their mental health and seek support when needed. This can include seeking therapy, joining support groups, and practicing self-care activities such as exercise, meditation, and mindfulness.
TBB’s work in Kenya is just the beginning. As we explore opportunities for international programming, TBB is working towards creating a world where mental health care is accessible and inclusive for all. By encouraging wellness practices and supporting the growth of local trainers to provide mental health support, TBB is helping create a world where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health.
As a society, we must also do more to support caregivers of children with disabilities. This can include advocating for policies that improve access to healthcare and support services, as well as promoting greater understanding and acceptance of disability and diversity. We must recognize the resilience and strength of caregivers and ensure they receive the support and resources they need to care for their children while also taking care of their own mental health.
As we continue to recognize the importance of mental health awareness and advocacy, let us remember the work that TBB does each month. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those struggling with mental health challenges and create a brighter future for all by supporting TBB’s efforts to advance mental health support for all.
