Understanding Your Disability

What It Is, How It Happened, Typical Prognosis, & How Therapy Can Help
Welcome to “Understanding Your Disability”, one of our training programs focused on adult disabilities. The objective of this program is to empower persons with disability and/or their caregivers to understand their diagnosis, to educate persons with disability and/or their caregivers on options for therapy, and to advocate for a multidisciplinary approach for comprehensive diagnosis and treatment.
TBB Certified Trainer, Vincent, hosted a community training on September 7, 2023 at the Kiserem Epilepsy Foundation in Githurai Mwihoko in Kiambu County, outside of Nairobi. The training focused on arthritis and low back pain. Watch the video to see a standout moment when community members asked specific questions on how they can receive rehabilitative services for themselves and their families.

Understanding Your Disability

WhaT is IT?

Our “Understanding Your Disability” program provides education on twelve different adult disabilities common worldwide through an interdisciplinary standpoint. The training emphasizes and empowers adults with disabilities and/or caregivers with knowledge about disability and rehabilitation.

Why Do We Do This?

Our local Kenyan team members highlighted the need for this program, which originated in their community. After conducting a thorough strengths and needs assessment, we discovered a recurring issue: patient education was frequently overlooked. Moreover, many patients lacked understanding of their disabilities and were often unaware of the available services.

How Do We Do This?

A global team of volunteer therapists, working alongside local Kenyan therapists, co-developed this program. These local therapists underwent our Training-of Trainers (ToT) process to become TBB Certified Trainers. Each month, TBB Certified Trainers identify venues, organize local clinicians, and lead 2-3 hour training sessions on one of the 12 diagnoses based on group needs. The sessions combine lectures with lively participant engagement. TBB Certified Trainers collect pre and post-test data and document presentations through pictures and/or videos. TBB Certified Trainers play a pivotal role in the expansion of our impact by training additional individuals, which continuously extends our program’s reach.
