Our “Empowering Your Patient” program promotes ongoing education of local clinicians by reviewing the etiology, typical presentations, and prognosis of twelve adult disabilities common worldwide through an interdisciplinary standpoint. The training emphasizes clinicians to empower their patients with knowledge about disability.
Our local Kenyan team members highlighted the need for this program, which originated in their community. After conducting a thorough strengths and needs assessment, we discovered a recurring issue: patient education was frequently overlooked. Moreover, many patients lacked understanding of their disabilities and were often unaware of the available services.
A global team of volunteer therapists, working alongside local Kenyan therapists, co-developed this program. These local therapists underwent our Training-of Trainers (ToT) process to become TBB Certified Trainers. Each month, TBB Certified Trainers identify venues, organize local clinicians, and lead 2-3 hour training sessions on one of the 12 diagnoses based on group needs. The sessions combine lectures with lively participant engagement. TBB Certified Trainers collect pre and post-test data and document presentations through pictures and/or videos. TBB Certified Trainers play a pivotal role in the expansion of our impact by training additional individuals, which continuously extends our program’s reach.
